Pediatric neurology is a medical specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system in children. This includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. One of the most common pediatric neurological disorders is epilepsy, which is characterized by unprovoked seizures. Febrile seizures, which are convulsions caused by a fever, are also very common in young children but are typically not considered a sign of epilepsy. Another very common condition that pediatric neurologists treat is cerebral palsy.

You should see a pediatric neurologist if your Pediatrician recommends it or if you notice any of the following symptoms in your child:

Unexplained or recurrent seizures.

Frequent or severe headaches.

Unexplained weakness, numbness, or changes in movement.

Sudden changes in behaviour or consciousness.

To help ensure an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, parents should bring all relevant documents to the appointment. This includes previous test results, notes from other doctors, and even school report cards that provide insight into the child’s development and behaviour. The more information the doctor has, the better they can tailor the care plan.

In addition to the child neurologist, your child’s care team may include nurse practitioners who assist in managing day-to-day care and coordination. A neuropsychologist may be involved for in-depth cognitive and behavioural assessments. Depending on your child’s needs, other pediatric specialists such as pulmonologists, urologists, or others may also be included.

Please discuss and follow your doctor for instructions, keep your child awake or only allow limited sleep if a sleep-deprived EEG is required. If it’s a planned EEG, Wash your child’s hair the night before (no gels or oils).

Prepare your child explaining the machine is noisy but safe and painless. Please remove all metal items before the scan. Follow any instructions as advised by your child’s doctor.
