Every day, in fact almost every second, someone who is seriously ill receives a blood transfusion. Too often, we take it for granted that there will be a regular supply of blood available in the hospitals for a transfusion should we need one. We forget that blood is not a commodity that can be manufactured by a company and sold for use. It can only be obtained by donation from people and a transfusion service consisting of a well-run network of health professionals and lab staff to ensure that the blood supply is safe.
In an Obstetric unit (where deliveries occur) we have a great need for blood and blood products. Most often this need arises without warning. Severe hemorrhage after delivery in majority of the instances is unexpected and catastrophic. This is the most common cause of why mothers die in childbirth.
As you are aware childbirth and deliveries are not planned or timed events .They can occur at anytime during day or night. When these emergencies occur at odd hours it is very difficult for any hospital / staff members however well-intentioned to arrange large quantities of blood or blood products. However if our affiliated blood banks have a steady stream of altruistic donors, it is easy to circumvent this difficulty.
Therefore we sincerely appeal to all of you to donate blood (if not on a regular basis, at least once in the course of your wife’s / daughter’s / sister’s pregnancy)
Voluntary unpaid blood donors are the cornerstone of safe and adequate blood supplies. Voluntary blood donors are those who donate blood, plasma or cellular components of their own free will for altruistic reasons and are not under any pressure from hospital staff or family members to donate blood. They entrust their blood donations to be used as needed, rather than for specific patients.
What are the advantages?
• The first and foremost advantage of donating blood is the exalted feeling of saving someone's life. If we donate the little excess blood in our body, it could save someone's life without creating any problem for us.
• Blood donation is an excellent way to get rid of excess iron accumulated in our body due to its overconsumption. Iron overloading is also thought to increase the risk of heart diseases.
• Studies have shown that donating blood regularly can be beneficial for the heart and circulatory system and can reduce the risk of heart diseases, especially among young people.
Blood donation is not hazardous. Before donating blood, your hemoglobin level will be tested. If it is low, then you will not be allowed to donate blood.
You do not need a medical degree to save lives. Just a fair degree of humanity.
Donate Blood: Save Lives
