The neonatal intensive care unit, commonly known as NICU, is a highly specialized healthcare unit designed for the treatment and intensive medical care of newborns. Our NICUs are embedded with state-of-the-art medical equipment, advanced support systems for vital organs, such as CRRT, HFOV and ECMO services, and a team of highly skilled medical professionals dedicated to providing specialized care for neonates. It is worth noting that newborns in need of intensive care often fare better when they are born in a facility with a NICU, rather than being transferred after birth.
Rainbow Children's Hospitals boasts one of the largest and most advanced tertiary care NICUs, featuring an integrated perinatal center that encompasses fetal medicine and high-risk obstetrics care, all under a single roof. Within Rainbow's NICU, you will find the pioneering Advanced Neonatal Transport Service in India. These NICUs provide the highest level of neonatal care, with Neonatologists, Respiratory Therapists, Lactation Consultants, and Nurses available round-the-clock, ensuring attention to critically ill newborns and preterm infants. With a wealth of experience and a track record of success in treating infants, Rainbow's expertise shines when caring for preterm babies, low birth weight infants, and neonates with respiratory issues.
Rainbow has achieved humungous success in treating extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies, those weighing less than 1 kg at birth, and holds the country's highest survival rate for these tiny infants. Notably, Rainbow's NICU team successfully saved a baby with a birth weight of just 375gms, earning recognition in the Limca Record for saving the smallest baby of South East Asia. Furthermore, the team saved a 22-week preterm baby with a birth weight of 450gm. Rainbow Children’s Hospital has even earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the ‘largest gathering of people born prematurely’.
Rainbow's Mothers' Milk Bank ensures that preterm babies born at Rainbow receive only human milk. Additionally, newborns have access to our special Kangaroo Mother Care Services, encouraging and supporting the development of a strong emotional bond between mothers and their children, making our approach to childbirth centered around the family.
The Department of neonatology at Rainbow offers comprehensive treatment for various conditions, including Child Development, Child Neurology, Pediatric Allergy/Immunology/Pulmonology, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology, and Pediatric Hematology & Oncology.
Additional facilities at Rainbow include an advanced CPAP setup for infants with respiratory diseases, laboratory services, open head warmers and incubators, ROP care, physiological monitors, a Pediatric ICU, a vaccination center, bubble CPAP, and ventilators.
