Making a decision to have a baby is momentous. Before you embark on this journey you may be emotionally prepared but is your body ready? Almost half of the pregnancies are unplanned. Better outcomes can be achieved with pre-pregnancy care. Planning ahead and taking care of yourself before becoming pregnant is the best thing you can do for you and your baby.
Pre-pregnancy Consultation helps to…
1.Modify your diet and lifestyle to achieve healthy body weight.
2. Review your current medication and put you on safer drugs.
3.Complete your pending immunizations.
4.Control pre-existing hypertension, diabetes or seizure disorders.
5.Screen for infections like chlamydia, HIV, etc.
6. Also, problems during earlier pregnancies like preterm birth, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, can be prevented in next pregnancy by proper care and support by your doctor before you conceive.
So as and when you decide to get pregnant, schedule a preconception examination and counseling with your doctor. All this is necessary for preparing yourself for this joyous event.
Your body needs a regular supply of nutrients to grow, replace worn out tissues and to provide energy. Your doctor will advise you regarding your daily dietary intake of nutrients from food along with supplements like iron, folic acid, vitamins, proteins.
Practicing a healthy lifestyle is necessary to reduce the risk of some birth defects. Smoking and alcohol intake even in small amount, need to the given up totally before conceiving.
Getting a healthy weight is very important. If overweight, in addition to having difficulty in conceiving you may be at increased risk of several pregnancies and childbirth-related complications. Similarly, being underweight increases the risk of low birth weight baby with health and behavioral problems extending well into adolescence and adulthood.
So be well prepared, well informed and protected to make your journey safe and joyous.
